Mother’s Day: A special celebration at ELY
Mother’s Day, is an annual celebration in Ireland, and is always a special day. In Ireland, we celebrate Mother’s Day on the 31st of March this year. This is an entire day dedicated to the wonderful women in our lives, Mothers!
Even though we are thankful for mothers every day of the year, on this day it’s different. Mother’s Day is a well-deserved excuse for mothers to sit back and relax. Give them the royal treatment that they deserve!
Mother’s Day hasn’t always been celebrated by giving mother’s tokens of appreciation, as we do today. With a quick history lesson from the History Channel, we learn that the celebration of mothers and motherly figures can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Secondly, Wikipedia states that the first modern holiday of Mother’s Day was celebrated in 1908 in the United States. A campaign by Anna Jarvis, to honour her mother, a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers in the American Civil War, started in 1905. Her campaign’s aim was to set aside a day to honour all mothers.
