Alta Alella ‘Mirgin’ Reserva Brut Nature Cava 2016 €29
Cava has undergone a resurgence in recent times, and is no longer considered a cheaper alternative to Champagne, but rather a quality alternative. Alta Alella are one of the finest producers of sparkling wines in Spain, as this Cava will attest. Bone dry, with vibrant green apple and citrus fruit, it makes a perfect aperitif or partner for most seafood.
If you feel like really splashing out, try the Alta Alella ‘Mirgin Opus’ Paraje Calificado 2014 essentially the Cava equivalent of a Grand Cru, and one of only 12 wines to be awarded this highest classification. Worth every penny. €49
Muhr van Der Niepoort Cuvee Vom Berg, Carnuntum, Austria 2015 €21.50
Looking to try something different? Cuvee vom Berg is a blend of Blaufrankisch, the great Austrian red variety, and Syrah. The result is an extremely fine, supple red, with a Pinot-like silkiness, and Syrah’s trademark peppery finish. Great with any meat dish, but particularly good with rack of lamb.
Chateau Viaud-Lalande, Lalande de Pomerol, Bordeaux 2014 €24
Bordeaux is traditionally considered one of the perfect wines for Easter, especially if the dinner involves Lamb. Typically, we’d be looking at the Cabernet-heavy wines of the Left-Bank, with their cassis and minty profile, but this Lalande de Pomerol is just too good to pass by. Rich, plummy and velvety smooth, this is outstanding value in right -bank Bordeaux. Works equally well with Roast Beef or Lamb.
Fontodi Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy 2015 €30
Fontodi is justly considered one of the finest estates in Tuscany, if not all of Italy, and their Chianti is an example of Sangiovese at its most expressive. Red berry and cherry fruit, firm but fine tannin, and a cleansing acidity on the palate make this the ultimate “food wine”. Pairs fantastically with slow cooked meats.
Agusti Torello Mata ‘Xic’ Xarel-lo, Penedes, Spain 2017 €18
In keeping with the Cava theme, here’s a wonderfully crisp, lemon-fresh white to suit a variety of dishes. Xarel-lo (Charel Lo) is one of the varieties traditionally used to produce Cava, but makes some wonderful dry whites too. Enjoy with anything from shellfish and seafood to chicken or just simple salads.
